Due to the little difference in melting point and thermal conductivity between the two metal materials, the fusion welding between them is almost impossible, but the explosive welding is not difficult. After the aluminum steel composite material is made by explosion method, its application is limited because of their different properties. It is difficult to make chemical equipment and pressure vessel after welding like titanium steel, stainless steel steel and copper steel composite material. Up to now, the aluminum steel composite is mainly used as the aluminum steel transition joint connecting aluminum or steel respectively. Aluminum steel composite materials include composite plate, composite tube and composite tube rod. Composite plate can also be used to make and process composite tube and composite tube rod. These explosion welding aluminum steel transition joints have many applications in production and science and technology.

The cathode aluminum bus and cathode steel bar in the aluminum electrolytic cell are connected by the explosion welding aluminum steel transition joints. In this way, the temperature of the aluminum steel joint can be controlled below 400 ℃, so as to ensure that the aluminum layer and steel layer of the joint will not crack and fall off, and that the joint surface has good conductivity.

Aluminum steel bimetal can be obtained by explosive welding, which is used as the intermediate transition joint in welding steel structure. With this kind of transition joint, the connection length of 800m can be completed. Therefore, explosion welding aluminum steel transition joints are widely used in shipbuilding and repair.
