aluminium steel transition joints in marine constructions

Explosive welding is used in ship manufacturing. This technology can solve the problem of aluminium steel transition joints. In the past, screw or rivet connections were used to connect the sealant, which accelerated the corrosion of seawater medium. For this reason, the aluminium steel transition joints technology can completely replace riveting. At present, it has been widely used in various shipyards in Europe. Aluminum alloy-titanium-low carbon steel (stainless steel) three-layer  transition joints are widely used in the cabins, side and masts of frigates and other ships, as well as decks and deck facilities.

Aluminium steel transition joints produced by Chalco Clad are usually used to manufacture various transition joints. If titanium is added between aluminium and steel, the three-layer transition joint of ALUMINIUM-TITANIUM-STEEL is adopted, and the bonding strength and conductivity of the joint remain unchanged when the service temperature reaches 450 C. Due to the limited thickness of the original aluminium plate, when large thickness aluminium-steel composite plate is needed, the method of multiple explosive welding can be used to thicken the aluminium plate.

In the manufacture of aluminium steel transition joints in marine constructions, there will be enough complex impact process problems. On the one hand, the low density of aluminium and the high density of steel require high impact velocity; on the other hand, high impact velocity leads to a large number of thermal precipitation in the bonding zone, which may produce brittle intermetallic compounds, which adversely affect the bonding quality. In addition, the low melting temperature of aluminium alloy must be considered. The middle layer is usually used for this purpose.
